I am paralysed and all I am capable of right now is to give a brief account of simply what I feel after the Saeima amended the citizenship law yesterday, 9 May 2013, and introduced—basically it smuggled it in—the notion of ‘state nation,’ valstsnācija.
In one of my recent posts I
protested against using the term, and called for banning it as hate speech,
because it qualifies one ethnic groups as a 'state nation', defines some sort
of a ‘nation’ in ethnic terms, limits it as a privilege to one group of people
whose belonging is, in turn, being defined physiologically—you are no Latvian
unless you were born Latvian, like a disease. This is, again, a privilege to
one and humiliation to another, all on the basis of ethnic origin.
Now it’s not just hate
speech. Now it’s part of national legislation, no definition though. The
Latvian lawmaker still owes me and a couple of millions other suckers a
definition of ‘state nation.’ Well, in a very transparent way, it’s clear even
without a definition. The new version of the law doesn’t cough up a definition
in the chapter where it presents the definitions it’s, so to say, not ashamed
I no longer feel I belong
to the Latvian nation because the state in its law says I am physiologically
wrong and whatever I do, whatever language I speak, whatever I call my country,
I am foreign because Latvian law defines me as physiologically non-Latvian.
Then I guess I should be looking for a place where I wouldn’t at least feel
humiliated being really foreign.
From now on I am officially
foreign everywhere. It doesn't really matter for me any longer. Isn’t that
tremendously stupid? Again, I really am overwhelmed, feel personally insulted
and need time to calm down. This is really, really gross and so immensely stupid.
A physiologically defined
nation is no nation. A physiologically defined Latvia
is no Latvia,
because it has no tomorrow.
